Der, die, das: Finding the Right Article
This article explains rules and tips to help you more easily find the correct article (der, die, or das) for German nouns. This will make you more confident using the German language.
In German, every noun has a specific article: der for masculine nouns, die for feminine nouns, and das for neuter nouns. There are many rules that can help you choose the right article.
Rules for the Article "der" (masculine)
Many nouns that refer to male people are masculine. This includes job titles, for example:
- der Lehrer (the male teacher)
- der Bäcker (the male baker)
Seasons, months, and days of the week are always masculine:
- der Winter (the winter)
- der Januar (the January)
- der Montag (the Monday)
The cardinal directions and most weather phenomena are masculine:
- der Norden (the north), der Süden (the south), der Osten (the east), der Westen (the west)

All alcoholic drinks are masculine, except for "das Bier" (the beer):

Some nouns have specific endings that often indicate the article "der". Note that there are almost always exceptions with endings:

- Most nouns ending in -ant: der Demonstrant (the demonstrator), der Elefant (the elephant)
- Exceptions: das Croissant, das Restaurant
- Most nouns ending in -or: der Motor (the motor), der Traktor (the tractor)

- das Bäuchlein (the little tummy, from der Bauch - tummy)
Substantivized infinitives are verbs that have been turned into nouns. They are always neuter:
- das Essen (the food, from essen - to eat)
- das Schreiben (the writing, from schreiben - to write)
Substantivized adjectives and colors are also neuter:
- das Gute (the good thing)
- das Böse (the evil thing)
- das Rot (the red color)
- das Gelb (the yellow color)
Example: Das Rot des Sofas gefällt mir nicht. (Here "das Rot" refers to a specific shade of red, not the color red in general.)
All fractions are neuter, except "die Hälfte" (the half):
- das Drittel (the third)
- das Viertel (the quarter)
- das Achtel (the eighth)
Some nouns have specific endings that often indicate the article "das":
- Nouns ending in -o: das Auto (the car), das Konto (the account), das Foto (the photo)
