Du or Sie: The Right Address in German

This article explains when to use "du" or "Sie" in German and how to choose the right form of address in different situations.

Contents

In German, there are two different ways to address someone: the formal Sie and the informal Du. It's not always easy to decide which form is appropriate, even for native speakers. However, some situations are clear:

  • You would never use "du" with a female police officer. This could be seen as an insult.

In many other situations, you need to negotiate or decide on the right form of address.

When to use "Sie"?

The "Sie" form is the more formal way to address someone. There are situations and people you should always use "Sie" with:

  • Older people: When you don't know someone and they are older, "Sie" is appropriate. For example, you would use "Sie" with neighbors if you don't know them and they are older.
  • People in positions of authority: People in higher positions, like your boss or supervisor, are addressed with "Sie".
  • People you don't know: Generally, you use "Sie" with strangers. You should be especially careful if someone is older or a respected figure.

Some people find "Sie" stiff and distant, like a wall. So, you should always pay attention to how the other person wants to be addressed.

When to use "Du"?

The "Du" form is the more informal way to address someone. It is often felt as more personal and friendly.

  • Family and friends: Family members, friends, and relatives are always addressed with "du". This is natural.
  • Colleagues and acquaintances: You usually use "du" with colleagues or acquaintances too, especially if you have been working together for a while or know each other well.
  • Younger people: Younger people are usually addressed with "du". If they are teenagers, for example, 12 or 13 years old, "du" is always appropriate.
  • In certain environments: In some urban settings or places where people know each other (like in a pub or a shop), people tend to use "du". There's a feeling that people know each other, even if they haven't met personally.

Context-Dependent Address

The decision of whether to use "du" or "Sie" often depends on the context and is influenced by various factors:

  • Demeanor and friendliness: A person's demeanor can influence how you address them. A friendly, open person might be addressed with "du" more readily.
  • Age: It's not just obvious age that plays a role (e.g., gray hair), but also how old someone looks or what clothes they wear.
  • Positive or negative mood: The other person's mood can also play a role. If someone is in a positive mood, you might be more willing to use "du".

Some people are more reserved about using "du" and don't use it with everyone. There are also situations where you have to ask yourself whether to use "du" or "Sie".

Dealing with Uncertainty

If you are unsure whether to use "du" or "Sie", here are some tips:

  1. Always use "Sie": If you are unsure, it is safer to use "Sie" with the person. You are always on the safe side, as it is considered more polite.
  2. Ask: You can directly ask the person: "Should we use 'du' or 'Sie'?" or "What do you prefer?". The other person is then responsible for setting the standard. This avoids misunderstandings.
  3. Wait: You can also wait until the other person indicates which form of address to use.

Regional Differences and Evolution

The way people address each other in German has changed over time. In the past, it was more common to use "Sie" even within the family, but this is no longer the case today. Sometimes, people even used "Sie" at school, and only from a certain age (e.g., 14) could you choose whether to be addressed with "du" or "Sie".

In West Germany, it was common for a long time to use "du" more quickly than in East Germany. People in the old federal states were used to using "du" very quickly. Today, using "du" has become more common overall, and you find it more often, even when shopping.

Awkward Situations

There can be awkward situations when you choose the wrong form of address:

  • Using "du" with a respected person: For example, if you accidentally use "du" with your boss or an older person, it can be seen as disrespectful or insulting. One woman once accidentally used "du" with her teacher and even called her "Mama", which was very embarrassing for her.
  • Insult: Using "du" with a police officer is considered insulting an official. However, the reaction also depends on the police officer and how they perceive it.

Some people are very sensitive about how they are addressed. If someone feels offended by being addressed with "du", it's best to switch to "Sie" immediately. It's always better to ask the person or let them suggest the form of address.
